Tell Congress: U.S. Out of Venezuela!
The Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES) joins the international condemnation of U.S. military attacks against Venezuela, which have reportedly killed at least 80 people, and abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, a former head of the National Assembly who later served as Attorney General under Chavez.
Not only do these actions constitute a grave violation of international law, but they also have all happened without congressional approval.
Several Members of Congress have gone public with statements that the Trump administration misled them about their plans in Venezuela, pledging no land invasion or attempts at regime change.
This is all the more reason why Congress must reassert its authority to make sure these attacks do not evolve into a full-fledged war and that no more lives are lost.
The Senate will vote THIS WEEK on another War Powers Resolution to block further U.S. hostilities against Venezuela. Contact your Senator TODAY to urge them to vote yes!
The most effective thing to do is to call and leave a voicemail or a quick message with the front desk. This call line will connect you to your Senators’ and Representative’s office and suggests a very short message: 1-833-STOP-WAR (1-833-786-7927).
You can also fill out the form on the right to send a quick email to your Senators and your Representative. (The sample message reflects their past votes on similar legislation).
Under cover of darkness, on January 2, the United States bombed several sites in Venezuela, as part of escalating military aggression against the country, and abducted Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Venezuelan and Cuban officials have reported that at least 80 people were killed in the attacks.
Since September, Trump administration officials have bragged about carrying out repeated strikes on boats in the Caribbean and the Pacific, killing an estimated 100 people, claiming - without presenting evidence - that they were carrying drugs.
Now, following Maduro’s abduction, Trump has stated that the U.S. is planning to “run” the county and re-insert U.S. businesses into oil production in Venezuela, making clear the true nature of the illegal military actions.
This threat goes far beyond Venezuela, especially in light of recent U.S. threats against Colombia, Mexico and Cuba.
More broadly, U.S. armed forces opening fire on civilians or carrying out military attacks against foreign leaders based on an allegation that they are drug traffickers poses a dangerous risk to peoples around the world and here in the United States, too.
Congress should act immediately to halt continued use of military force which poses a risk throughout our hemisphere. They need to hear from you today!
