Cut U.S. Military and Devastating "Development" Aid to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras!
The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has repeatedly made clear to the Salvadoran people and the world that he believes he is above the law. Bukele relies on the police and military to override Supreme Court rulings and democratic legislative decisions, and to intimidate political opponents all in the name of consolidating his own power.
The United States has a long history of complicity in systematic human rights abuses carried out by Salvadoran military and police forces, often in order to uphold economic models that privilege corporate interests and exploit workers and natural resources. The same is true in Honduras and Guatemala.
In December 2020, through our pressure and your support, the U.S. Congress took an important first step by restricting Foreign Military Financing to El Salvador, and maintaining those restrictions for Guatemala and Honduras.
But it's just the tip of the iceberg. The U.S. Congress should immediately cease military and police funding as well as funding for extractivist development in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.
We need to pressure Congress for bold changes in U.S. policy towards the region, especially as the Biden administration pushes for increased funding for repressive military and police forces and devastating economic “development.”
