Congress: Speak out against Fraud and Attacks on Democracy in El Salvador!
Join CISPES in calling on the U.S. Congress to speak out on reports of fraud in the Salvadoran elections and challenge the State Department's tacit endorsement of Nayib Bukele's illegal presidency!
Social movement groups and opposition parties in El Salvador have decried the February 4 presidential and legislative assembly election as fraudulent on several levels. Concerns about the vote count follow extreme gerrymandering and last-minute rule changes intended to hamper opposition parties from maintaining their foothold in the legislature.
Nayib Bukele, who ran for an unconstitutional consecutive presidential term, declared himself the victor on election night before the elections authority had announced preliminary results, and claimed that his party, Nuevas Ideas, had won "at least 58 out of 60" seats well before most poll workers had even started to count legislative ballots.
In the weeks that followed, journalists, civil society organizations and international elections observers sounded the alarm over systematic irregularities in the vote count, including what appears to be evidence of vote tampering and ballot stuffing. Opposition political parties submitted formal petitions to annul the results of the legislative elections; the petitions were denied by the elections authority, which proved itself unwilling to challenge Bukele and his party at every turn.
The Biden administration, despite previous claims that they would determine their stance based on whether the process was "free and fair," has been silent - other than to congratulate Bukele on his victory.
That's why we need to push the U.S. Congress to speak out against Bukele's dangerous attacks on democracy - and challenge the State Department to do the same.
Send an email to your Rep and Senators in Congress calling on them to COUNTERACT the State Department's tacit endorsement of President Bukele and to take action to END U.S. security assistance to Bukele’s repressive regime.
