Congress: Speak out now against Bukele's repression and unconstitutional re-election bid!
Join CISPES in calling on the U.S. Congress to speak out against Salvadoran president Nayib Bukele's assault on democracy and human rights - and challenge the State Department's tacit endorsement!
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is circulating a Congressional sign-on letter to the State Department to uplift the voices of the Salvadoran popular social movement and civil society who are risking it all to express concern over human rights abuses, militarization, political persecution, and threats to El Salvador's hard-won democracy. Please make a quick call (likely leave a message) and/or send an email today to as your Rep to sign on! Just fill in your information to the right to get started.
Context: Social movement groups in El Salvador, led by workers, young people, feminists, and agricultural communities, have been protesting in the streets to denounce Bukele’s human rights abuses and attempt to remain in office in the February 4, 2024 presidential elections in blatant violation of the constitution.
While Bukele arbitrarily arrests tens of thousands of innocent people without due process, including union leaders, land defenders, and historic anti-mining activists, throughout a now-indefinite State of Exception, the Biden administration has largely chosen to look the other way.
In fact, the U.S. has shown increasing public support for the Bukele government in the months leading up to the elections, leaving little doubt as to the State Department's position.
As Salvadoran and international human rights organizations and legal scholars decry the politically repressive climate of the upcoming elections, it is shameful that the Biden administration is choosing to put their weight behind Bukele in hopes he will defend their economic and geopolitical interests - at the expense of the Salvadoran people.
That's why we need to push the U.S. Congress to speak out now - use this form to call on your Rep to COUNTERACT the State Department's tacit endorsement of Bukele's unconstitutional reelection campaign and END security financing and training to his repressive regime. Deadline for Reps to sign is Wednesday, January 24 so please contact your Rep today!
