Tell the government of El Salvador: Free political prisoners!
Dile al gobierno de El Salvador:
Libertad a lxs presxs politicos!
July 22, 2022 marked one year since police unlawfully arrested five former cabinet members from El Salvador's first leftist government, following a previous wave of politically-motivated arrests of local elected officials from the same FMLN party. Now, over 40 members of the FMLN are in prison, under house arrest, or in exile due to political persecution.

Under President Bukele, the National Civilian Police, the Armed Forces, and the Attorney General's office have become instruments of repression and political persecution against the popular opposition.
Starting in April 2021, and without presenting any evidence, the government has arrested 14 members of the leftist FMLN party and is still holding 10 in extended pretrial detention without having presented any evidence and without regard for their health or safety. Arrest warrants have been issued for many others who are currently in exile.
The situation has continued to dramatically escalate, with these targeted arrests being merely a precursor to a nationwide suspension of basic human and constitutional rights. The Bukele administration's ongoing State of Exception has led to mass arbitrary arrests of tens of thousands of Salvadorans and over 60 deaths in the country's prisons in four months.
The Committee of Family Members of Political Prisoners of El Salvador (COFAPPES) is hosting a press conference at the end of August to call for the release of political prisoners and an end to widespread persecution and human rights abuses. Let's show that international solidarity has their backs!
We are circulating parallel letters to:
1) the Attorney General of the Republic, calling on him to stop arresting innocent people and political opponents and to fulfil his duties with impartiality.
2) the Human Rights Ombudsman, calling on him to be proactive in defense of the safety and well-being of Salvadoran citizens facing persecution and to inform the national and international community as to the true state of human rights in the country.
3) the magistrates of the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, calling on them to uphold the law and justice, in accordance with the constitution.

Estamos distribuyendo cartas paralelas:
